Introduction to a NYC Hopeful

This photo is from last November in Central Park (Photo by Julia Bauer).

Hello everyone, my name is Maddie Owen. I am a senior Public Relations major at the University of Oklahoma. Along with being a PR major I am pursuing minors in Sports Management and International Studies. These areas of study all offer something that I love and have been apart of my life for as long as I can remember.

I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma but have lived in many different places since then. When I was little I was a highly competitive dancer, though moving when I was eight years old did put a slight damper on my dreams of dancing my whole life. When I was eight years old my family moved to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It was nothing short of amazing. People often ask me if I remember living there since I was fairly young, but I remember bits and piece about my time there. One of my most fond memories was having the opportunity to attend the American School of Dubai. I made so many amazing friends there, many of whom I am still in contact with today.

After two and half amazing years in one of the warmest places on earth my family moved to The Woodlands, Texas, which is just north of Houston. During our time here I pursued passions in dance again. Five years later and it was time to move again, this time we were off to London, England. My first two years of high school were spent living in this amazing city. I was given the opportunity to travel to France, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain all during my time living in London. I can honestly say the London, England is my favorite place on earth and I would give anything to go back and do it all over again.

I have a love for Sooner football unlike one many girls have. My father raised me to be a crazy football fan but the only team I'd ever cheer for is OU. My love for Sooner football and the beautiful campus is what set my decision on attending college here.

Over the last three years at OU I have participated in a number of different things on campus, my favorite being Sooner Scandals. I was able to ignite my passion for dance and performance again through my sorority which has been amazing.

I have worked three incredible internships over the last year and half. These have taught me more about the real world then I ever thought I'd know before graduation.

Upon graduation I hope to pursue a career in my favorite city in the United States, New York, New York. I fell in love with New York City last March and haven't stopped thinking about my dreams of moving there since the day I landed at Laguardia.

This is a photo of my two amazing dogs, Waffle and Tootsie (Photo by me).

Throughout this semester you'll probably hear a lot about my four pets. I have two cats, Skittle and Hershey. I also have two dogs, a corgi named Waffle and a weenie dog mix named Tootsie. My animals are my obsession and will probably be the base of all my stories throughout the semester.

  1. Chasing OU football since childhood, huh......that only goes to show that OU was meant for you and you had to be there no matter what happened. And you want to be in New York and experience the big city life. I also love the big city life, but I would not want to be in a city as big as New York. And I think your pets' names are so cute: Skittle and Hershey are so fit to be cats' names. But I think Waffle and Tootsie are cute names for your dogs too!

  2. Hey Maddie! I really enjoyed reading your introduction! I think I it so cool that you have gotten to live in so many amazing places throughout your life! Like you, I love New York City! Being a PR major as well, I would love to know what your dream job in NY is! I hope you make it to NY after you graduate and I can't wait to read more from you this semester!

  3. What a great travel history, Maddie, and thank you for sharing the pictures of Waffle and Tootsie... and maybe all your dogs and cats can learn about the animals of the Indian tradition, both real and divine. There is a beautiful book we have in the Library that you might check out (snag it now before someone else does!); it's Pashu by Devdutt Pattanaik, one of the best writers on Indian mythology, and this is his book with all the animals. It's wonderful! I'm sure it will give you some great storytelling ideas that can feature your animals and the animals of India interacting in some world of imagination! :-)

  4. Hi Maddie! It must have been so much fun learning and interacting with so many different people. I’m sure you miss some of it, but I love your passion for OU! I was born in New Jersey, and I absolutely loved the busy life there. I hope to visit New York soon with my friends. I know this is typical, but I really want to see the ball drop for New Years. It’s nice to meet you! Good luck with your plans for the future!

  5. I'm going to start of by saying I am jealous about how much of the world you have already gotten to see at the young age of 22(I'm just assuming you're the typical age of a senior). Pretty cool that you are so into football and who knows, maybe one day you'll find yourself in a high position with a sporting team in NYC.

  6. MADDIE!! How in the world do I not know any of this!? It is cool to learn about someone I already consider my friend!! I miss you and it seems as though you are doing well! I look forward to this class together (even though it is online). I have never been to NYC but would love to visit. So, graduate, move there and invite me for a week hahah!!!

  7. Hi Maddie!
Oh my goodness, how I would have loved to lived in the places you have!! I was also born in Tulsa and also moved around a lot. Only difference is, I moved places like Florida and Texas and you moved places like Dubai and England?!? I am definitely jealous! I actually know a number of people from the Woodlands and that area, so that's cool! I am from Allen. We played the Woodlands in football! :) Your pets are so cute, and I share your obsession. Nice to meet you!

  8. Firstly, I would say that your pets are super cute. Furthermore, it seems that you have been very fortunate to see many places at such a young age and that is fantastic. I went abroad to Europe for the first time two years ago and I absolutely loved it. I could not imagine how fast-paced and mind boggling it is to spend several months and years in different countries. I'm sure you created several memorable moments and experiences that you can carry into your future.

  9. Hey Maddie! So good to meet you. I'm a PR senior too, but I apologize.. I'm not sure we've met before? How weird! Anyway, we seem to be super similar. I grew up loving OU football (and Dallas Cowboy football for that matter) because of my dad, too! I didn't even bother applying anywhere else. I wish you the best of luck in NYC someday - and I absolutely LOVE your pets' names!!! Too cute.

  10. Hi Maddie! Wow, your pets are so cute! I am amazed with all of the places you have lived, especially Dubai and London. I absolutely LOVE London, and hope to study abroad there through the Honors at Oxford program. Knowing that you lived in Dubai is so cool! I visited there when I was younger, but have no recollection of being there! I also was amazed by your love for Sooner Scandals! I am a part of CAC General Council, and the current Chair, Courtney, is such a doll! I'm sure you know her! Nice to have met you!

  11. Hello Maddie! I was also born in Tulsa, Oklahoma! Wow, moving to Dubai seems like it would be a completely different environment and could not even imagine moving there so young. London is somewhere that I would love to visit as well! I have never been outside of the United States. It’s crazy how you started in Oklahoma and ended up traveling all over and coming back to university here. Best of luck on your New York dream!

  12. Hi Maddie! It’s really nice to meet you! It sounds like you’ve lived an exciting and adventurous life thus far. I really love travel and seeing new places so I have to admit that I’m rather jealous of your vast experience in foreign countries. It’s amazing how so far your life seems to have come full circle. I wish you the best of luck getting that dream job and hope to get to know you better this semester.

  13. Hi Maddie!! Wow I am so jealous of your opportunities to live all around the world! I traveled to Europe for the first time two summers ago, and London is where I eventually where I want to end up! My mom actually works for Southwest Airlines and because she travels for works, we rarely traveled for vacations. NYC is great and I firmly believe there is no better time in our lives to try to live out our dreams than after college graduation. Best of luck and I look forward to reading your story from this week!!

  15. Hey Maddie! First of all, your dogs are so adorable! It's so great that you have had the chance to live in so many different countries and travel around the world--it definitely gives you a unique perspective on life. London is one of my most favorite places in the world and I definitely agree with you that it is a place worth visiting over and over again. 16. Hi, Maddie! I was also born in Tulsa but I stayed there until I was able to attend OU and live in Norman. It's really awesome that you lived in Dubai!! I don't think I know anybody that has ever lived in a cool place like that. I have heard about the American school in Dubai and I am so jealous that you got to go there! I hope you are able to fulfill your dreams of living in New York one day with a great career!

  17. Maddie, wow! A major and 2 minors is so awesome! You must be really hardworking. That is so cool that you lived in Dubai! I've lived in Oklahoma my whole life, so I guess I'm kind of boring! AND London?? That is so awesome. Why did your parents move to so many different (and awesome) places? Your dogs are so cute! I wish you posted a picture of your cats too! Thanks for sharing!

  18. WOW. All I can say is you lived my dream life growing up Maddie. How cool it is to hear all about your travels and where you have been. I have only been to a total of 3 countries not including the USA obviously and I thought that was an accomplishment. I am also a Communication major at OU so our Majors are completely different except I will not have two minors. Also your dogs are so cute and my dog is half corgi!

  19. Hi Maddie, nice to meet you. Wow it is so cool that you go to live in so many amazing places. I've always wanted to go to Dubai one day. I'm curious as to why London, England is your favorite place? Is it the atmosphere, the people. or the food? Also your dogs are adorable. I love corgis and how short their legs are haha

  20. Hi Maddy! It is so cool that you have lived all of the world. I feel like a lot of people don’t get that opportunity, so I am glad that you enjoyed it. I have lived in The Woodlands my entire life! It’s crazy that we could have potentially crossed paths at one point. Your dogs are adorable! I also love the names of all of your pets. Thank you for sharing!

  21. Hi Maddy, it is nice to meet you. I love corgis! I am so jealous. My friend has one and they are the cutest dogs. It is really cool that you have lived in Dubai. I have heard some awesome things from my friends that have visited. Hopefully you can make it to New York! Not only will there be opportunity for you, the art scene is awesome. Maybe you could catch a ballet while you are there. Good luck with the rest of the semester.

  22. Hey Maddy! It is nice to meet you. We share the same favorite dog. I love corgis, such a unique dog unlike any other breed. That's awesome that you have been to and lived in Dubai. I Have heard it is one of the coolest places on Earth. I hope to go some day. My sister just moved to New York City and loves it, I hope you get to experience it as well!

  23. It’s so cool that you’ve already seen so many places in your life! International Studies sounds like a perfect minor for you, and it sounds like you bring an important perspective to it. I got the chance to study abroad in the UK last summer, and after visiting London, I completely agree with you—it’s definitely a special place. I loved how it had such a relaxed feel for such a major city, so I imagine living there at the beginning of your high school career was especially amazing. Also, random aside, but your animals’ names are a ton of fun.
